THE COMING VACCINE: A CATHOLIC RESPONSE

CATHOLIC & ORTHODOX LEADERS CALL ON CIVIL LEADERS TO DO THE MORAL THING WITH COVID VACCINE
As Canadians await a safe vaccine that can be widely used to protect individuals and society from the dangers of the Covid-19 Coronavirus, it is apparent that it may come with some unsurmountable moral complications. Some vaccines - although they do not have to be - may be built upon an immoral foundation. Some vaccines developed over the years (since the 1960s) were based on the use of cell lines from electively aborted babies (i.e. the same cell lines from the 1960s!). Not a few people find such a direct connection to be not only repugnant, but ethically unjustifiable.
The matter may become somewhat confusing as theologians and ethicists debate and weigh the "greater evil". Does the immorality of developing a possible solution (e.g. vaccine) from immorally obtained resources (in this case: intentionally aborted fetuses) outweigh the potential evil of many people becoming ill and some dying because of a coronavirus?
The question now being discussed is - what if 
government agencies decide not to provide an ethically acceptable vaccine? Does one wait for an ethically developed vaccine? Trust in the hand of the Lord? Are there conditions by which one could accept an immorally developed vaccine? If so, what might those conditions be? If not, what is the alternative? Is a vaccine the only or even the best solution in the first place? Why would one take or refuse the vaccine? What might be the consequences? These and other questions will be more intensely discussed in the days and weeks ahead. However the proper starting point is to encourage the scientists and political leaders to start on the right path.

Dear Prime Minister,
We write to thank you for the federal government's ongoing efforts to prevent transmission of COVID-19, especially among the most vulnerable Canadians. We endorse the earliest possible development of safe, effective anti-viral vaccines and the broadest uptake of vaccination.
We urge your government to fund the development of vaccines that do not create an ethical dilemma for many Canadians. On one hand, the wide uptake of vaccines is essential to protect citizens from the transmission of disease. On the other, a vaccine produced using abortion-derived cell lines raises conscience concerns for anyone who might be offered that vaccine and is aware of its lineage. This dilemma will emerge if there are no alternatives to vaccines developed with the use of human fetal cell lines obtained from elective abortions.
COVID-19 vaccine candidates that are ethically unacceptable are produced using human cell lines such as PER.C6 and HEK 293, derived from elective abortions. [1,2] Our ethical objections relate to the use of this abortion-derived lineage, both the destruction and the exploitation of unique human lives.[3] The subsequent manufacture of vaccines using such ethically-tainted human cell lines demonstrates profound disrespect for the dignity of the human person.
Governments must ensure that COVID-19 vaccines that become available do not create an ethical dilemma for Canadians. Fortunately, numerous vaccines under development do not raise ethical concerns. One excellent Canadian example is being developed at the University of British Columbia by Dr. Wilfred Jefferies. His methodology uses self-amplifying mRNA, made entirely in a test tube without cells or tissues, according to email dated May 11, 2020 from David Prentice, PhD, of the Charlotte Lozier Institute (DPrentice@lozierinstitute.org). Канада: єпископи за етично прийняті вакцини
Єпископат Канади надіслав уряду своєї країни лист із проханням підтримати програму досліджень щодо вакцини проти коронавірусу без використання людських клітин, отриманих внаслідок аборту.
В листі, адресованому прем'єр-міністру Джастіну Трюдо та міністру охорони здоров'я Петті Гайду, єпископи заохочують до досліджень етично прийнятної вакцини, що була б доступна всім, які хто її потребує. - «Ми хочемо якнайшвидшої розробки безпечних і ефективних противірусних вакцин і підтримуємо якнайширше їй використання, проте водночас закликаємо до того, щоб робота над їх виготовленням не нехтувала поваги до життя».
Далі єрархи стверджують, що в такому разі виникне ризик введення в обіг вакцин, які виготовлені з клітин, отриманих з абортованих плодів, як це вже відбувається у випадку деяких досліджень, що проводяться особливо у Великобританії. Етичні застереження стосуються використання абортивного шляху, що полягає у знищенні та подальшому використанню унікальних людських істот для створення вакцини, яка пізніше рятує інших людей. Це вияв браку поваги до людської гідності. Вакцина, виготовлена з клітин, отриманих внаслідок аборту, створюватиме серйозний конфлікт зі сумлінням для кожного, кому її пропонуватимуть. Єпископи заохочують до пошуків ефективних альтернатив. Інші дослідження, що проводяться, наприклад, Університетом Британської Колумбії, відбуваються за процедурою, що етично прийнятна, тому що в ній не використовуються людські клітини і тканини.
Окрім канадського Єпископату, лист підписали також керівники багатьох організацій, серед яких Католицький Інститут Біоетики, Конференція православних єпископів, католицька федерація лікарів і психіатрів, Католицька Ліга Прав Людини, Канадський Католицький Альянс за Здоров'я, Католицька Організація Життя і Сім'ї, Федерація Католицьких Студентів та Католицьке Національне Товариство Медсестер.
