Holy See Press Release, 07.07.2019 [B0579]

"The Holy Father Francis, in the days 5-6 July 2019, presided over a meeting with the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, together with the Metropolitans and members of the Permanent Synod, and the Heads of the competent Departments of the Roman Curia.

With this initiative the Holy Father wanted to express his closeness to this Eastern Catholic Church sui iuris . Together with his collaborators, Pope Francis appreciated the history of this Church, its spiritual, liturgical, theological and canonical tradition, its fidelity to communion with the Successor of Peter, confirmed and sealed with the blood of martyrs.

The reflection took place in mutual listening and was accompanied by prayer, seeking the necessary conditions for the development and flowering of this Church in today's world.

Particular attention was paid to pastoral work, evangelization, ecumenism, the specific vocation of the Greek Catholic Church in the context of today's challenges in the socio-political situation, in particular the war and the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, as well as its service in various countries of the world.

It is hoped that this sharing methodology can continue, in order to promote the harmonious development of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, as well as of the other Eastern Catholic Churches in their identity and mission.
