UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AROUND THE WORLD HONOURS OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
A year ago, the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, together with His Beatitude Sviatoslav, decreed that the first Sunday of July should be designated as the Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. This is in honour of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as depicted in the icon of the same name that is hugely popular among the Ukrainian faithful and among every nation throughout the world.
The miraculous Byzantine Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was entrusted to the Redemptorist Fathers in 1865 by Pope Pius IX and. ever since, they have been successfully promoting devotion to the Virgin Mary through that beautiful image. The traditional day for venerating Our Lady of Perpetual Help for many has been June 27. On that same day in 2001, Pope St. John Paul II declared as 'Blessed' 27* Martyrs that had given their lives for Christ in the Soviet Communist years. This might cause a challenge to a community that wanted to adequately honour both the Blessed Virgin and the new martyrs. Whatever the reason for the Synodal decision to establish a unique feast day for Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the decree does not go into details expect to state that it should take place annually "on the first Sunday of the month of July".

* 25 of those declared "Blessed" this day were grouped together as "Blessed Nicholas Charnetsky and Companions" since they were all members of the Ukrainian Catholic Church who died as a result of Soviet Communist persecution from 1941-1973. Two addition martyrs were also declared blessed at this same time, albeit, separately to stress that one, Blessed Omelian Kovch, was a victim of the fascist Nazi regime, while the other, Blessed Theodore Romzha, was an Eastern Catholic Bishop in Ukraine and a victim of Communist repression, but of a different ecclesial jurisdiction. And, of course, Blessed Josaphata Hordashevska, SSMI, although not a martyr, was also declared blessed at this time as her cause was thoroughly prepared and Pope St. John Paul chose to include her beatification while he was in Ukraine for his historic pastoral visit. Two Polish Roman Catholic clerics were also Beatified in Ukraine in 2001. Four years later, they were both canonized in Rome.
