STOLEN ITEM FROM HISTORIC STATUE RETURNED!
Whoever decided earlier in the week to damage and steal two items from a statue of one of the patrons of the McGregor Street Cathedral ... seems to have had a change of heart. Parishioners of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral in Winnipeg's North End, reported that they had found the head in a knapsack by one of the entrances of the church. The cross/staff, that was detached and stolen at the same time, has not yet been returned or found.
It is uncertain as to what, if any, investigations are presently underway. The Rector of the Cathedral, Monsignor Michael Buyachok - in a plea published in the news media - had asked that if the stolen pieces of the statue were returned there would be "no questions asked". Perhaps the Monsignor's heartfelt plea and/or the significant international media coverage inspired the thieves to return the sacred and invaluable item.
It still needs to be decided how and if the head can be restored and what other repairs may be necessary.
