EAST SELKIRK STUDENTS CELEBRATE EASTER WITH ARCHBISHOPS
April 28, 2019
COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER FOR JOYFUL EASTER CELEBRATION
Some 150 students in the East Selkirk Ukrainian Bi-lingual program brought their traditional Easter baskets to the BVM Parish Church in East Selkirk for the blessing. The students were accompanied by the school principals, teachers, school board trustees and the school superintendent, as well as some parents and family members. The two schools involved are East Selkirk Middle School and the uniquely named Happy Thought School. Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak spoke to the students about the contents of the Easter baskets and how in earlier times in Ukraine all the contents came from the homes and farms of the villagers. This included both food products as well as beautiful pysanky and embroidered cloths. Metropolitan Lawrence was joined by Archbishop Stefan Soroka, Fr. Isidore Dziadyk OSBM and long-time parish priest in the Selkirk parish district - Fr. Peter Chorney. Following a group photo session on the church steps, everyone went to the community hall next door for an Easter brunch, before returning to their schools.
Here are some photographic highlights of the event...
