WHAT IS PATRIOTISM?
August 23, 2016
Project “Open Church” presents conversation with His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav answering some important questions for the faithful. Today’s topic; question of patriotism.
If someone is saying that he is a patriot of his country but is not ready to sacrifice, he cannot be a true patriot of his country. The 35th President of the United States John F. Kennedy in his inaugural speech said: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav talks about patriotism as human “VIRTUE”. His Beatitude quotes venerable Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytskjy, when he addressed the same question. Venerable Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytskjy said that patriotism or rather Christian Patriotism is the fulfillment of God’s commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
