Presentation on Nicene Creed

February 20, 2025

On February 18, 2025, the Archdiocese of Winnipeg commemorated the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed by hosting two insightful presentations by Fr. Gregory Hrynkiw of the Ukrainian Eparchy of Saskatoon. These events brought together clergy from various archdioceses and archeparchy to deepen their understanding of this foundational statement of Christian faith.

The day's events commenced with a morning session at Petrus Hall in Winnipeg, specifically organized for the clergy of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, the Archdiocese of Saint-Boniface, and the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg. Fr. Hrynkiw delivered an in-depth lecture focusing on the historical context and theological significance of the Nicene Creed. He delved into the circumstances leading up to the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, highlighting the challenges the early Church faced in defining orthodox beliefs amidst various heretical views.

He also emphasized the Creed's role in unifying Christian doctrine, noting how it served as a bulwark against divergent theological interpretations. He discussed the collaborative efforts of the early Church fathers in articulating a creed that would succinctly convey the essence of Christian faith, ensuring doctrinal consistency across the Christian communities.

Fr. Hrynkiw began by recounting the historical backdrop of the Council of Nicaea, illustrating the political and religious dynamics of the time. He then unpacked the language of the Creed, explaining the profound theological concepts embedded within its declarations. By breaking down each article of the Creed, he made its rich meanings approachable, enabling attendees to grasp its significance more fully.

A central theme of Fr. Hrynkiw's presentation was the practical application of the Nicene Creed in daily life. He encouraged the faithful to move beyond rote recitation, urging them to internalize the Creed's declarations as guiding principles for personal conduct and spiritual growth. In light of the Jubilee Year, he advocated for the daily recitation of the Creed, suggesting that it could serve as anchors in the midst of life's challenges.

This event fostered a sense of unity. The Archdiocese of Winnipeg extended its appreciation to Fr. Gregory Hrynkiw for his dedication and willingness to share his expertise. His visit not only honored a significant milestone in Christian history but also energised the local community, inspiring them to live out the truths professed in the Nicene Creed.
