GIANT OF FAITH
November 4, 2024
Andrey Sheptytskyj, an influential leader and Metropolitan of Lviv of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), is commemorated for his profound spiritual, social, and cultural impact on Ukraine and beyond. His legacy is marked by perseverance through the turbulent periods of the First and Second World Wars and the Soviet occupation. Born in 1865 to a noble family, Sheptytskyj became Metropolitan of Galych in 1901, with his Cathedral in Lviv, guiding the Church for over four decades through some of the most challenging times in European history.
Known for his dedication to both his faith and his people, Sheptytskyj worked tirelessly to support his people, often risking his own safety to protect the oppressed. He sheltered persecuted Jews during the Holocaust and promoted unity across diverse religious and ethnic communities. His efforts laid the foundation for the modern UGCC, balancing strong faith with a commitment to social justice.
Despite his significant contributions, Sheptytskyi remains relatively unknown outside Ukraine. However, his influence endures within the UGCC, where he is honored as a father and mentor to clergy and faithful alike. The Ptriarch Svyatoslav Head of the UGCC has voiced prayers for Sheptytskyj's official recognition as a blessed, hoping that his beatification will proceed, making him a recognized figure in the Universal Church.
The recent 80th anniversary of his repose, observed on November 1, 2024, served as a solemn tribute, with Ukrainians worldwide commemorating his life and work. His legacy stands as a testament to the power of faith, inspiring future generations in Ukraine and beyond.
