October 21, 2024

On October 6, 2024, the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in the municipality of St. Andrew celebrated an important milestone in its rich history-110 years of faith, tradition, and service. The anniversary event, marked by a solemn and joyous gathering of parishioners, clergy, and was graced by the presence of Bishop Andriy Rabiy, whose presence made the occasion even more memorable.

Over the course of 110 years, the parish history is woven with the struggles and triumphs of its members, many of whom were Ukrainian immigrants or descendants of early settlers in the St. Andrew's region. Despite various challenges, including socio-political changes and evolving demographics, the parish has remained steadfast in its mission to serve God and the community.

The parish is dedicated to the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a title of Mary derived from Eastern Christianity, which emphasizes her role as a guardian and intercessor for the faithful. The title carries a rich tradition, especially within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, of which this parish is a part. The Protection of the Theotokos is celebrated on October 1, a feast day that emphasizes Mary's intercession for the faithful, making the October 6 celebration in 2024 an extension of this deeply spiritual theme.

A key highlight of the event was the presence of Bishop Andriy Rabiy, an auxiliary bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg. Bishop Rabiy delivered a powerful homily during the Divine Liturgy, reflecting on the significance of the Blessed Virgin Mary's protection and the importance of preserving the parish's heritage for future generations.

The day began with a solemn Divine Liturgy, led by Bishop Rabiy, and co-celebrated by the parish's priests Fr. Yaroslav Buduykevych. After the liturgy, the celebration continued with a festive banquet, where the parish community gathered for fellowship and to honor the legacy of those who came before them.

Throughout the day, there were moments of reflection on the past 110 years, with a digital exhibit showcasing the parish's history. Old photographs, offered a glimpse into the history of the parish, and the various events that have shaped the community.

The day was also marked by a captivating presentation delivered by Mrs. Marylynn Woloshyn, who meticulously traced the rich history of the parish and the Ukrainian community that has surrounded it for generations. Her presentation was not only informative but also deeply moving, as it connected the congregation to their ancestral roots, recounting the struggles, triumphs, and unwavering faith of the Ukrainian immigrants who founded the parish in 1914.

As the parish embarks on its next chapter, it continues to be a source of hope, strength, and inspiration for generations to come.
