Purpose and Ministry of Marriage Tribunal in Our Archeparchy
December 13, 2023
The Inter-eparchial tribunal is a ministry of the Metropolia of Winnipeg, which assists the faithful who wish to submit petitions for the annulment of their marriage. The annulment process is a judicial procedure that examines the validity of a marriage according to the norms of canon law. The Tribunal will evaluate each case individually and impartially, with respect for the dignity and rights of the parties involved. The annulment of a marriage does not affect the legitimacy of the children born from that union, nor does it imply any moral fault on the part of the spouses. The annulment simply declares that the marriage was invalid from the beginning, due to some impediment or defect that prevented a true and lasting bond of love and fidelity. One may need to obtain an annulment if their previous marriage ended in divorce and wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. Others seek an annulment for personal and spiritual reasons, e.g. to have closure or to better understand themselves and their past relationships.
The Tribunal is available to assist anyone who wishes to initiate or participate in an annulment process, and to provide pastoral care and guidance throughout the procedure.
