THE LIGHT OF CHRIST SHINES UPON US
December 11, 2023
Members of PLAST, the Ukrainian Youth Scout Organization in Manitoba, will traditionally once again bring the Peace Light of Bethlehem to Winnipeg. On Sunday, December 17, 2023, at 9 a.m., the Flame of Bethlehem will be officially brought to Winnipeg in Sts. Volodymyr and Olga Cathedral. Immediately after the ceremony, scouts (plastuny) will take the Peace Light to the nursing home and many Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox parishes in the city.
The Peace Light of Bethlehem originates from a lamp at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord in Bethlehem, which has been burning for many centuries. The Light has become a symbol of peace, warmth, harmony, tranquility and love for people and the world. The tradition of sharing the Flame of Bethlehem began in 1986 by the Austrian television and radio company ORF from the city of Linz. From the very beginning, it was a charity event to support poor children and everyone who needs help and attention during the Christmas season. Later, it was taken over by Austrian scouts. Every year they go to Bethlehem to get the flame and transport it by plane to Vienna in a special lamp. From there, the Light is transported to various cities in Europe and North America.
We invite everyone to receive the Peace Light of Bethlehem this Sunday in our Cathedral!
