From January 29 to 31, 2026, St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Transcona (Winnipeg) was transformed into a fine school of sacred music. The parish hosted a seminar for parish cantors and singers entitled “Raise Your Voice!”
The event was led by spiritual mentor and instructor Father John Sianchuk, CSsR, an associate pastor at St. Joseph’s Parish in Winnipeg and a well-known expert in liturgical music.
Over the course of three days, participants bridged the gap between theory and practice. The program was robust, covering everything from the history of church music and proper voice placement to a deep understanding of the specific responsibilities of a cantor during services. Particular attention was given to mastering the Eight Tones and the practical accompaniment of the Divine Liturgy. Attendees also received printed resources to serve as reliable guides for the continued development of their skills.
The central message of the seminar was well defined: cantoring and liturgical singing are not merely vocal performances, but a true ministry requiring discipline, humility, and a profound love for prayer. The gathering brought together 20 singers from Winnipeg and suburbs, ranging from experienced cantors to beginners just discovering this vocation.
Karen Kawaler, one of the participants, shared her impressions:
“Leading the singing of the Liturgy is a special calling. Learning the tones and the intricacies of church music is not easy, for this reverent music can only be sung with a great love for the Lord.”
St. Michael’s Parish extends its sincere gratitude to Father John for his wisdom, his dedication to sacred music, and the time he devoted to shaping a new generation of church choir leaders. May this experience inspire all participants to praise God with even greater confidence!
