Bridging Past and Present: A Blessed Weekend with Bishop Andriy Rabiy

Last weekend, the parishes of the Gilbert Plains District experienced a time of profound joy, deep reflection, and spiritual renewal. We had the distinct honor of welcoming the Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg, for a pastoral visit that beautifully connected our current congregations with the rich history of our faith and ancestors.

A Warm Welcome at St. Elias Parish (Grandview)

His formal visitation began in Grandview at St. Elias Parish. Bishop Andriy, Fr. Ivan Hnativ, and parishioners gathered in prayer to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, which was filled with beautiful singing led by Dan Kozak. Following the service, parishioners and guests enjoyed a wonderful time of fellowship, sharing refreshments, stories, and laughter with Bishop Andriy.

Honoring Our Roots in the Roblin Area

A deeply moving portion of the visit took place in the Roblin area. Bishop Andriy took the time to meet with parishioners of Holy Redeemer Parish (Roblin) and visit local farms, churches, and the sacred grounds where our forebears—among the very first Ukrainian pioneers to settle and cultivate these lands—are laid to rest. It was a solemn moment to pray for their eternal souls and acknowledge the immense sacrifices they made to establish our community and preserve our faith.

The Culmination: St. Michael’s Parish Praznyk (Roblin Farms)

The spiritual peak of the weekend was the celebration of the parish praznyk (feast day) at St. Michael’s Parish (Roblin Farms).

During the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Andriy touched the hearts of everyone present with his warm, fatherly words. In a particularly moving moment, His Excellency read aloud the names of St. Michael’s founders and benefactors. He shared historical details of how these early pioneers supported, built, and cared for St. Michael’s Church—even down to the specific offerings and contributions they made generations ago.

As Father Ivan stated, “In moments such as these, history no longer seems distant, but becomes present in our midst. There was a profound sense that our ancestors were standing in the church at the Divine Liturgy here and now, among us. And this, too, is of great importance, for it reminds us of who we are.”

With Gratitude

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Andriy for the blessed time we shared together. His visit was not just a celebration of our present community, but a powerful reminder of our identity, our history, and the enduring legacy of faith left to us by our ancestors.

Mnohaya Lita, Bishop Andriy!
