Today, January 25, 2024, Bishop Lawrence Huculak, Archbishop and Metropolitan of Winnipeg, celebrates his 73rd birthday. With prayer and best wishes the faithful, religious and clergy wishing him many happy and blessed years.

The future Bishop Lawrence, was born on January 25, 1951 in the city of Vernon British Columbia, Canada.

He joined the Order of St. Basil the Great (OSBM) in 1969 in Ottawa. He made his novitiate at St. Josephat's Monastery in Glen Cove, New York, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Ottawa in 1974. Metropolitan Huculak then studied at the Pontifical Athenaeum of San Anselmo as well as at the Oriental Pontifical Institute in Rome, where he earned a doctorate in Oriental Church studies. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1977.

In 1986, after spending eleven years in Rome, he was appointed pastor at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mundare, Alberta. In 1994, in addition to his pastoral work, he became a professor of Byzantine liturgy at the seminary in Edmonton. Finally, in September 1996, he was named Superior and Master of Novices at Sts. Peter and Paul Monastery until his nomination as Ukrainian Bishop of Edmonton in 1997. On April 3 of 1997 he was ordained as the new bishop Edmonton Eparchy. Since than he has been a member of the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops since 2003 and has also been a member of the Episcopal Commission for Canon Law - Inter Rite.

His Grace was appointed Metropolitan and Archbishop of Winnipeg Archeparchy on 9 of January 2006 and installed in the Cathedral on February 11 2006.

In the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, Archishop Lawrence is a member of the Synodal Liturgical Commission and a member of the Synodal Commission for Priestly Formation.

On April 28, 2022, Metropolitan Lawrence, Archbishop of Winnipeg, was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Saskatoon.

This year he will celebrate 47 years of priestly ordination, and 27 years as a bishop. At the present time he is the second longest-serving Metropolitan Archbishop of Winnipeg Archeparchy.

In his ministry as bishop of Edmonton and archbishop of Winnipeg he ordained 16 new priests and 7 bishops. Metropolitan Lawrence was main consecrator for 4 bishops among them Bishop Ken Nowakowski and Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski, at the same time he was co-consecrator of three other bishops: Most Rev. Paul Chomnycky OSBM, Most Rev. David Motiuk and the most recent co-consecration for Most Rev. Michael Smolinski.
