Metropolitan Lawrence, born Daniel, attended elementary and secondary schools in Vernon, British Columbia. He later studied at St. Volodymyr’s College in Roblin, Manitoba.
In 1969, Daniel joined the Order of St. Basil in Ottawa and completed his novitiate at the Monastery of St. Josaphat in Glen Cove, New York. He was ordained on August 28, 1977. Father Lawrence earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Ottawa and continued his theological studies at the University of Saint Anselm in Rome. He defended his doctoral thesis at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in 1985.
After eleven years in Rome, he returned to Canada in 1986 and served as parish priest in Monterey, Alberta. In 1996, he became the superior of the monastery and director of the Basilian Fathers Museum. He taught Byzantine Liturgy at the Theological College in Newman.
On December 16, 1996, Pope John Paul II nominated Father Lawrence as Bishop of Edmonton. His episcopal ordination took place on April 3, 1997. On January 9, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Metropolitan of Winnipeg. His enthronement occurred on February 11, 2006.
Metropolitan Lawrence has served on various commissions within the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Saskatoon in 2022 and served until January 21, 2024.
