Patriarch Lubomyr's Ecological Message

at the Feast of the Nativity of the Lord 2009:

Beloved in Christ!
It is a significant coincidence that on the threshold of Christmas we have been witnesses to the International Conference in Copenhagen on Climate Change. Delegates from all over the globe took part in these proceedings in order to determine together ways in which to avoid the catastrophe which today threatens the human race. In Copenhagen scientists re-iterated that this threat has been caused by the selfish and careless stance of people towards their environment. For decades, if not for centuries, humans have been behaving like creators and actual owners of the world around them, extravagantly exploiting and destroying nature. Hence today, after all this so-called “Stewardship”, humanity has finally understood that we have put ourselves in great danger. Many of us now realise that we are not the real owners or lords of our planet and that in fact nature is gift of God to humankind, a gift which needs to be respected and used within reason. This is indeed what the Scriptures teach us: “The LORD God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and to take care of it. Gn. 2:15

Dear brothers and sisters, over 2000 years ago our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ was born in the village of Bethlehem of Palestine. This is indeed an extraordinary event, for God Himself, the Creator and King of the universe took flesh and human form and became one of us. His birth was a sign that humanity and everything connected to it is so good that God’s own Son, though Whom everything came to being, and without Whom nothing could exist (Jn 1:3), by his coming confirmed that all that God had created is good, even very good. (see Gn. 1, 4, 1Jh 3) By His baptism He sanctified the waters and the whole world, and by His death He conquered death – that reality that we are most afraid of. Through His life, His teaching and His ministry He demonstrated Who is the true Lord and Master of the universe. For ‘everything there is comes from Him, and is caused by Him and exists for Him. To Him be glory forever. Amen” Rom 11:36

Dearly beloved in Christ, as we stand beside the manger of Christ at this festive time, let us ask for the gift of gratitude to God, since everything that we have, our life, our environment, our salvation, is God’s gift to us.

On the occasion of this great feast it is my wish that we would truly discern who we are in the eyes of God. We are His beloved children who have been abundantly blessed and who on our part ought to always give thanks to our Creator and Heavenly Father and to the newborn Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. We need to desire a respect for everything that our God bestows upon us.

At this holy time, let us strive to understand that the realization itself of the truth that all that comes from God is good, is already another great gift of our Most Holy, Almighty God.

As I end my Christmas greeting, my sincere wish is that you may all have a true awareness of God’s love for us and may your hearts always overflow with gratitude for this great gift!

Memorial Day For Aborted Children
2d Saturday of the Great Fast

On the Second Saturday of the Great Fast, by means of common prayer, our Church honours the memory of aborted children. This day is meant to be a time of sorrow for the lost unborn children as well as a time of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Today, ever more often, we become witnesses as to how our contemporary culture, especially through the practice of abortion, is being transformed into a culture of death. A dramatic change people's world outlook is taking place. Their conscience is becoming calloused. This has become evident in the moral state of all of society and its values.

The first country in the history of humanity that legalized abortion on a federal level was the Soviet Union. Godless, Communist ideology, indifferent to the rights and needs of a person as a child of God and hateful toward the principles of existence established in the world by the God-Creator, introduced into human law the false concept of "the right of a woman to terminate a pregnancy". Later, this practice spread to other countries of the world.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! Let us not allow ourselves to be deceived by such a so-called "culture" which by using such terminology as "abortion", "termination of pregnancy", "women's reproductive health" and "cleansing" is actually cloaking the truth of a terrible crime - the killing of a living, but yet unborn person.

We must not allow ourselves to be misled, when they mollify us by speaking of a "zygote", a "foetus", an "embryo", a "growth" as though it pertains to something unintelligible and not to a living person - a human history that has already begun and ends only then when God calls her/him to Himself at an appropriate time! Let us not give credence to arguments of "free choice" and the "right" of women to kill, when no one considers in this "right" the right to life of a person who was conceived not of her/his own will!

Let us not justify ourselves by citing state "laws" that permit the "termination of pregnancy", while transgressing the greatest law - that of God. Present state laws recognize a person as a person only after birth, and persuade us to believe that up to that moment what is developing in the womb of a mother is a kind of a mass of blood and lifeless material. Let us not forget: nothing can become a human being if it was not such from the beginning!

Together with this, we also note that even the government is starting to realize that abortion is a great evil. That is why the Ministry of Health is implementing means to limit abortion. We must support such an initiative.

Let us remember that the gift of God's Commandments, which were received by man, is not a list of prohibitions to our detriment. They are a true guide to a successful and happy life, for which we should give thanks to God at all times. In contrast, ignoring the Commandments always leads to bitter consequences.

We must remind everyone that the Church never ceases to teach: God forbids the taking of the life of an unborn child! This sin is the grave sin of the killing of a person, regardless of what civil laws and purely human reflection have to say about this! We must above all pay heed to God and not man!

When the life of an unborn child is taken, the voice of her/his blood cries out from the earth to God for vengeance (Gen. 4:10). Thus, the burden of murder of a child inevitably affects the parents, their posterity and everyone involved in this sin. Its consequences are seen in physical health as well as in the psychological and emotional and even the spiritual.

However, the Lord said, " if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chr. 7:14) Therefore, in this time of the Great Fast, let us ask the Lord God to send us the gift of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation with aborted children. May our all-merciful Lord have mercy on us, on our mothers and our fathers, and on all generations, on our nation and our government and grant to the innocent unborn eternal dwelling in His presence.

The text of the two petitions, that are to be included in the Fervent Ektenia:

"We also pray, Lord, for the children intentionally killed in the wombs of their mothers, and also for those who became victims of human acts and experiments and died not having received the Sacrament of Baptism. You baptized them Lord in the sea of Your graces and may they not be denied Your divine light and the Kingdom of Heaven."

"Lord God, the Salvation of your servants, You do not desire the death of a sinner, but that he be converted and live. Today have mercy on Your servants - those mothers and fathers, who allowed an abortion to take place, as well as all those involved in any way in intentional infanticide. Grant them the grace of repentance, forgiveness and reconcile them with Your Holy Church."

Звернення з нагоди Дня пам’яті абортованих дітей

Слава Ісусу Христу!
Дорогі у Христі!

У другу суботу Великого посту наша Церква через спільну молитву вшановує пам’ять абортованих дітей. Цей день має стати часом скорботи за втраченими ненародженими дітьми, а також часом прощення та примирення.

Сьогодні ми все частіше стаємо свідками, як сучасна культура, зокрема через практику аборту, перетворюється на культуру смерті. Відбувається драматична зміна світогляду людей, черствіння їхнього сумління, і це позначається на моральному стані всього суспільства та його цінностях.

Першою країною, яка в історії людства узаконила практику аборту на державному рівні, був Радянський Союз. Безбожна комуністична ідеологія, байдужа до прав і потреб людини як дитини Божої, ненависна до принципів буття, закладених у світ Богом-Творцем, ввела в людський закон фальшиве поняття – «право жінки на переривання вагітності». Далі ця практика поширилася в інші країни світу.

Дорогі у Христі! Не даваймо себе обманювати так званою «культурою», яка вживаючи терміни «аборт», «переривання вагітності», «репродуктивне здоров’я жінки», «чистка», насправді приховує правду про страшний злочин – вбивство живої, але ще ненародженої людини.

Не даваймо себе звести, коли нас заспокоюють і говорять про «зародок», «фетус», «ембріон», «плід», начебто йдеться про щось незрозуміле, а не про живу людину, земна історія якої вже почалась і закінчиться тоді, коли Бог покличе її до себе у відповідний час!

Не вірмо аргументам про «вільний вибір» і «право» жінки на вбивство, коли у цьому «праві» ніхто не бере до уваги право на життя людини, зачатої не з власної волі!

Не оправдуймося чинними державними «законами», які дозволяють «переривання вагітності», порушуючи тим самим найголовніший закон – Закон Божий. Чинні державні закони визначають, що людина стає людиною лише після народження, схиляють також і нас повірити, що до цього у лоні матері розвивається якийсь згусток крові, бездушна матерія. Не забуваймо: ніщо не може стати людиною, якщо не було нею від самого початку!

Разом з тим, мусимо признати, що навіть держава починає розуміти, що аборт – це велике лихо і тому Міністерство охорони здоров’я України проводить відповідні заходи, щоб його обмежити. Таку ініціативу треба нам підтримати.

Пам’ятаймо, що дар Божих Заповідей, який отримала людина, не є списком заборон на шкоду їй. Це справжній дороговказ до успішного і щасливого життя, за який ми повинні повсякчасно дякувати Господові. Натомість ігнорування Заповідей завжди приводить до гірких наслідків.

Нагадуємо всім, що Церква не перестає навчати: Бог забороняє позбавляти життя ненароджену дитину! Цей гріх є тяжким гріхом вбивства людини, незалежно від того, що про це говорять державні закони та чисто земські міркування! Перше-бо нам треба слухатися Бога, а не людини!

Коли ж позбавляють життя ненароджену дитину, то голос її крови кличе з землі до Бога про помсту (пор. Бут. 4, 10). Тому, тягар вбивства дитини неодмінно позначається на її батьках, їхньому потомстві та всіх, причетних до цього гріха. Його відбиток залишається як на фізичному, так і на психічному, емоційному, а також духовному здоров’ї.

Проте Господь сказав: «Коли мій народ, що зветься моїм ім’ям, упокориться, буде молитись та шукати обличчя мого й навернеться від своїх лихих доріг, то я почую з неба й прощу гріхи їхні й вигою їхню землю» (ІІ Хр. 7, 14). Тому у цей великопісний час просімо Господа Бога зіслати нам дар покаяння, прощення та примирення з абортованими дітьми. Хай Всемилостивий Господь змилосердиться над нами, нашими матерями і батьками, поколіннями, над нашим народом та нашою державою, і дарує вічний побут біля Себе невинно убієнним ненародженим дітям.

Текст двох прохань, які треба включити в сугубу єктенію:

“Ще молимось Господи за дітей, навмисно убитих у лоні матері, а також за тих, що стали жертвами людських діянь та експериментів, і загинули, неприйнявши Тайни Хрещення. Ти сам охрести їх Господи в морі щедрот Твоїх і не позбав їх Твого Божого світла та Царства Небесного.”

“Господи Боже, Спасіння слуг Твоїх, Ти не хочеш смерти грішника, але щоб він навернувся і жив. Сам і нині змилосердися над слугами Твоїми – матерями та батьками, з волі яких було допущено аборт, та всіма тими, хто причетний до гріха навмисного дітовбивства. Подай їм ласку покаяння, прощення та примири їх зі Святою Твоєю Церквою.”
