APOSTOLIC NUNCIO ARCHBISHOP BONAZZI CONCLUDES SERVICE IN CANADA

Without announcing who his replacement might be, Pope Francis has appointed the currently Apostolic Nuncio to Canada, Most Reverend Luigi Bonazzi, as Apostolic Nuncio to Albania. Archbishop Bonazzi was appointed to Canada on 18 December 2013, but began his mission upon arrival to Ottawa on 4 February 2014.

Archbishop Bonazzi came to Canada in 2014 from his assignment to the countries of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. In fact, over his career in the Vatican diplomatic corps, His Excellency has served as the Pope's representative to Cameroon, Trinidad and Tobago, Malta, Mozambique, Spain, the U.S.A., Italy, Canada (previously), Haiti and Cuba.

Archbishop Bonazzi was born in Gazzaniga, Italy, on 19 June 1948, and was ordained a priest on 30 June 1973 for the Diocese of Bergamo (the diocese that made the headlines recently having been hit with hundreds of coronavirus deaths - including 25 priests). Having obtained a Doctorate in Education, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 25 March 1980. He is the bishop of the ancient Italian (now titular) Episcopal see of Atella.

Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi was regarded as very accessible to those that had dealings with him. He had a special love for his brother priests and thus became involved with the Canada's national federation of priests - attending their gatherings and sharing his own priestly experience. A recently as October, he delivered a message to priests at the Federation's 2020 online annual general meeting.
