In Vatican the Extraordinary Synod on the Family began its work

October 12, 2014

On October 5, 2014 in Vatican began its work the third session of the Extraordinary Assembly of the Synod of the Bishops, on which the bishops from around the world gathered to discuss the most pressing issues and challenges for the family in the modern world.

Opening the Synod, Pope Francis urged speakers “to speak honestly and listen with humility.” The Holy Father said, that everyone should say what he feels, because after the last consistory  in February 2014 some cardinals wrote to him that not all of them had the courage to talk about some of the problems in the presence of the Holy Father, fearing that he might think differently. This is not good and it is not the genuine Synodality. Pope Francis stressed that the Synod participants must respect and listen with an open mind and heart.

The main theme of the Synod is the pastoral care of divorced, however participants will talk about the gay marriages and contraception. The work of the Synod will continue until October 19. In conclusion a document will be issued, which will sum up the main themes of the Synod and will be the basis for the work of the Assembly in 2015.
