MAY 3rd MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF DEATH OF WINNIPEG'S 1st METROPOLITAN ARCHBISHOP

The First Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan of Canada, His Grace, Most Rev. Maxim Hermaniuk, CSsR, died on May 3, 1996. He is interred at All Saints Cemetery north of Winnipeg.

He ordained not a few priests for the Archeparchy of Winnipeg and religious orders, including Metropolitan-emeritus Stefan Soroka Bishop-emeritus Michael Wiwchar, CSsR and Msgr. Michael Buyachok and others.

He was a consecrating bishop, if not the principal consecrating Bishop at the episcopal ordinations of: Metropolitan Michael Bzdel, CSsR; Bishop-emeritus Severian Yakymyshyn, OSBM, Bishop Peter Stasiuk, CSsR; among several others. He, together with Pope St. John Paul II and Patriarch Joseph Slipyj consecrated the late Father and Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church - His Beatitude Myroslav-Ivan Lubachiwsky in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.

He was an active and influential Father of the Second Vatican Council - the 21st Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church (1962-1965).
