UGCC Head arrived in Australia for a pastoral visit

September 22, 2014

On September 17, 2014 Father and the Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav came to Australia for a pastoral visit.

On the continent, His Beatitude will visit several cities with large Ukrainian communities: Perth, Mellbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Sidney and Brisbane. The city of Perth became the first city to welcome His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav.  Representatives of the Ukrainian community and parishioners of the Ukrainian Church of St. John the Baptist greeted him  with bread and salt at the airport.

At the airport His Beatitude Sviatoslav was greeted by an elder of the Perth Aborigianal community, a representative of the Noongar tribe.  This was a traditional greeting of the native people of Australia for important guests who arrive for the first time to Australia.

Some people noted that the arrival of Patriarch Sviatoslav to Australia is a historic event. The faithful in Perth eagerly awaited the arrival of their Patriarch, because it was almost 30 years since the last time the Head of the Church visited them. It was in 1986 when Cardinal Myroslav Ivan Lubachivskyj visited Perth.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav celebrated Divine Liturgies in both Ukrainian and English. He also met with representatives of the Ukrainian community, students of educational institutions, the clergy, and representatives of the Australian government.

His patoral visit to Australia will last until September 30th.
