The Knights of Columbus held the annual ICCD draw event this year at Holy Ghost Parish Centre in Winnipeg. The event is traditionally organized by a council of the Knights that requests the honour of hosting the gala dinner, draw and dance. The honour fell to Fathers A & J Kulawy Council #9790 that is based in Holy Ghost Parish on Selkirk Avenue in the heart of Winnipeg. Not only did the Council host the gala evening event, but they also hosted two "degree" events earlier that same day! Starting early in the morning and running into the afternoon, the Frs. A&J Kulawy Council hosted the ceremonies initiating groups of candidates into the Knights of Columbus through the first "degrees".

[BTW Fathers "A & J", after whom Council #9790 is named, are two of three brothers - Wojciech (aka Adalbert), Jan and Paul - that became missionary Oblate priests. Two of them came to Winnipeg and served as the first priests of Holy Ghost Parish. The third brother, Fr. Paul, served mainly in Alberta before returning to Poland. Now there's a fascinating vocations story....!]

The evening began with all the Knights and their spouses invited to participate in the Saturday evening "vigil Mass" at Holy Ghost parish church. This was followded by a cocktail/fellowship hour in the parish centre auditorium.

State Chaplain, Fr. Michael Kwiatkowski, JCOD, opened the evening with a greeting and prayer. The members of Council #9790 prepared and served the meal themselves! (okay, apparently, they had a bit of help behind the scenes from the Ladies, but it was first class food and service). During the Dinner, children and youth from the Sokol Polish School of Dance performed at different intervals. Speeches and greetings were offered by a number of people, including Supreme Director Bro. Larry Kustra and Worthy State Deputy Bro. Dan Shepherd. At the close of the dinner segment, the Chaplain of Frs. A & J Kulawy Council, Fr. Jacek Nosowicz, OMI greeted the crowd in French and offered a closing prayer.

Following the dinner, the draw was held according to the pre-published rules with a few traditions thrown in the mix. The draw begins at 9:00 pm and every winning ticket is re-entered into the 'drum' and is eligible to be drawn multiple times. The co-chairs of the draw this year were past State Deputies Bro. Karl Brosch and Bro. Paul Dupré. Those who draw the tickets are members of the Manitoba State Council of the Knights of Columbus... as they come forward to perform their duty, they remove their suit jacket to reveal a white short-sleeved shirt as a show of their complete transparency (i.e. no surprises up their sleeves?). $40,000 in prizes was given out that evening, including a new car! sponsored by Birchwood Automotive.
