Redemptorist Fr. Peter Loza to be Ordained Bishop This Summer

It was announced today that Pope Francis gave his approval of the Ukrainian Catholic Synod of Bishops' choice of Redemptorist priest Fr Peter Loza to serve as auxiliary Bishop in the Sokal-Zhovkva Eparchy in Ukraine. At this time, Fr. Loza is serving as the Superior of Sts. Peter and Paul Monastery in the city of Chernihiv which is located in the Archeparchy of Kyiv. It is the practice of the Vatican to give auxiliary and curial bishops a "titular see" as they are not the Bishop of the territory in which they are serving. It is the longtime tradition that a Bishop Therefore, Fr. Loza will be ordained as the Bishop of a now ancient see "Panium". The last bishop to be appointed to that nominal see is the present Eastern Catholic Bishop Athanasius Orosz of the Eparchy of Miskolc in Hungary. Bishop Orosz held Panium while he too was an auxiliary Bishop 2011-2015.

Father Peter was born June 3, 1976 in the town of Kolodentsi in the Lviv province. He joined the Redemptorists in 1997 and after completing his studies in Lviv and Innsbruck, Austria, he was ordained to the priesthood on 26 August 2008. Since his ordination, Fr. Peter has had pastoral experience in parishes and as a women's prison chaplain. He also served as term as consultor to the Redemptorist Provincial Council of the Sacred Heart in Ukraine.
