“The creation of a new Metropolitan Cathedra in the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church is an affirmation and acknowledgment of the Patriarchal dignity of our Church”

July 24, 2014

The creation of new structures in the Church is a sign that it is growing and developing. The creation of a new Metropolitan Cathedra in Brazil testifies that our Church made a significant step in developing its sui juris structures on these lands. It is a new step toward the affirmation of the patriarchal dignity of our Church.

In 2012 the Patriarchal Synod of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church was held in Brazil. In remembering the hundred year history of the UGCC in Brazil and facing new challenges, the Synod of Bishops proposed to create a new Metropolitan Cathedra in Curitiba and a new Eparchy in Prudentopolis.

Following the proposals of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, on May 12, 2014, Pope Francis, raised the Eparchy of St. John the Baptist in Brazil in Curitiba to the status of an Archeparchy. The present Bishop Volodymyr Kovbych was named the first Metropolitan and Archbishop of the newly created Archeparchy.

At the same time, the Holy Father created a new Eparchy of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God in Prudentopolis.  Bishop Myron Mazur, presently the auxilliary bishop of the former Curitiba Eparchy became the first bishop of the newly created Eparchy.

Let us pray that the life of our Church will be active and produce a good harvest in the future.
