On Thursday July 16, 2015, Pope Francis received in private audience His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. In the course of the audience, the Holy Father authorized the Congregation to promulgate the decrees regarding the heroic virtues: “of the Servant of God Andrey Sheptytsky, of the Order of Saint Basil the Great, Archbishop of Lviv and Metropolitan of Halych.”
Together with the Servant of God Metropolitan Andrey, Holy Father promulgated other six candidates for the beatification process.
This year Ukrainian Catholics are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky birth. By this degree Pope Francis declared Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky a venerable.
At the age of 36 being elected as Archbishop of Lviv and Metropolitan of Galych, Andrey Sheptytsky became a spiritual social and cultural leader for Ukrainians in that difficult time.
Ukrainian Bishop Borys Gudziak of Paris said, that Metropolitan Andrey reach out to the Orthodox at the time, when ecumenism was not official church policy; he defended the Jews during the Holocaust; and he was close to artists, poets, intellectuals and writers.
Already in the 1950s, Kurt Lewin, the son of the murdered chief rabbi of Lviv &‐ saved by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, argue for his beatification. Eric Goldhagen, of Harvard University, wrote the following about Sheptytsky: “No other ecclesiastical figure of equal rank in the whole of Europe displayed such sorrow for the fate of the Jews and acted so boldly on their behalf.”
Father Peter Galadza from the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies said, that it is also important to talk about Metropolitan Sheptytsky's commitment to the poor. Being born into an aristocratic family, Metropolitan Andrey used his resources to create free clinics, provide countless scholarships and help victims of famine, flooding and war. Personally he lived a life of poverty wearing the same garb for many years.
The confirmation of “heroic virtues” - is one of the stages of the beatification process, after which the need for confirmation of a miracle obtained by the intercession of the candidate for beatification is required.
Let all of us pray for the beatification of the Servant of God Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky.
