ARCHEPARCHY COMMEMORATES UKRAINE’S INDEPENDENCE WITH PRAYER AND FELLOWSHIP

AN EVENING OF PRAYER AND SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE

INDEPENDENCE DAY OF UKRAINE 2022

The Metropolitan Cathedral Parish of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha - under the direction of the Rector of the Cathedral Fr. Ihor Shved - hosted an evening of prayer and commemoration for the Archeparchy of Winnipeg on the occasion of Ukraine's 31st Independence Day.*

There may have been less than the 1000 capacity of the Cathedral in attendance, but they brought enough spirit and enthusiasm to represent all the faithful of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg in imploring the Lord to grant an end to Russia's war against Ukraine and to renew Ukraine as the God-blessed country it has aspired to be since the famous Baptism facilitated by St. Volodymyr the Great over a millennium ago.

As the Archbishop of Winnipeg, Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak was away, His Grace Metropolitan-emeritus Archbishop Stefan Soroka agreed to lead the Moleben' prayer service in the grand church and preach a message to the crowd that had gathered. He spoke about the presence and hand of God in all these troubling matters. He offered words of comfort and encouragement to the people in attendance - many who are "newcomers" who had recently escaped with their lives and left loved ones still in Ukraine. The cathedral was filled with a sea of Ukrainian embroidery as everyone donned their best "vyshyttya" or an ensemble of the Ukrainian colours - blue and yellow. A few wore military garb, perhaps in memory of the thousands of soldiers that have died defending Ukrainian sovereignty and freedom and values.

Following the Moleben' everyone was invited to the north lawn adjacent to the parking lot to form a "living tryzub" for a photo and then to flow back to the east lawn for amazing food, a fundraising sale of Ukrainian articles, a concert and just good fellowship.

* Ukraine has enjoyed hard-won independence - declared, recognized or otherwise - over the centuries for various periods and in various ways. However, this Independence refers to the 1991 Declaration of independence from the Soviet Union that was confirmed by each of Ukraine's 27 provinces and regions for an average percentage of 92.3 of the population.
