UPCOMING EVENTS

The next meeting of the Presbyteral Council/College of Consultors will take place at 3:00 pm on Monday, June 5 at the Villa Maria Retreat Centre (100 Place villa Maria, St. Norbert). The next scheduled meeting is November 20. Note that the September 25 meeting is cancelled as the Ukrainian Catholic bishops in Canada will be on ad limina in Rome.

Annual Clergy Retreat: June 5-8, Villa Maria, Winnipeg, Retreat Master Most Rev. Lawrence Huculak.

The next Clergy Conference will take place Thursday, June 8, beginning with lunch at 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Villa Maria Retreat Centre. The last conference for the year will take place November 21. Note that the September 26 meeting is cancelled.

Graveside services will take place 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 4 (Pentecost, Gregorian; if rained out, then June 11) at Holy Family Cemetery; and 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 11 (All Saints Sunday, Julian, if rained out, then June 18) at All Saints Cemetery. Priests and deacons are reminded that they are not to begin private panakhyda services until after the main celebration.

Unity 2006 is an extraordinary event for young adults from across Canada. It is being held in Muenster, Saskatchewan at Saint Peter’s College from August 24-27. Sister Darlene Pelechaty, ssmi, and Father Mark Gnutel will facilitate the event. Pastors are asked to encourage their young adults to attend Unity 2006 and to include the following petition in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy: “We pray for Unity 2006, that as young adults gather to embrace and celebrate their faith, they open their hearts to the Lord. That this experience may help them to grow in awareness of God’s image in others, let us pray to the Lord.”

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace is accepting donations to help victims of the recent massive earthquake in Indonesia, while its Caritas Internationalis partners are already providing assistance on the spot. Contributions can be made via Internet at www.devp.org, by calling 1-888-664-3387, or by mailing a cheque to: Development and Peace, 5633 Sherbrooke St. East, Montreal (Quebec), H1N 1A3. Cheques should be marked “Indonesia Earthquake”.

The United Nations International Day of Families was celebrated on May 15, with the theme Changing Families: Challenges and Opportunities. Wishing “to call on all Canadians to build a society that promotes family as it strives to meet the needs of children in more effective ways,” the Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) has issued the attached message Daring to Meet Our Children’s Needs.

For your information, CCCB President Archbishop André Gaumond was one of a number of Canadian Church leaders who signed a recent joint letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper regarding upcoming opportunities for the Government of Canada to show leadership in international response to the global AIDS pandemic. The joint letter, a project of the Canadian Council of Churches (CCC), dated 8 May 2006, is attached.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has made available online links on The Da Vinci Code to help answer questions and lead to further reflection (www.cccb.ca).

When requesting Papal and Archiepiscopal blessings, for example, for wedding anniversaries, pastors are reminded to include a notation indicating that the persons are members in good standing with the Church.
