Christ is Risen!  Indeed He is Risen!

This is the day of resurrection. Let us be illumined by the feast. Let us embrace each other. Let us call “Brethren” even those who hate us. Forgive all by the resurrection. And thus let us sing: Christ is risen... (a paschal verse)

The first Encyclical Letter of Pope Benedict XVI, entitled “God is Love,” gives us the opportunity to reflect on God’s love as we celebrate Easter – the Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In this Encyclical the Holy Father speaks very profoundly of the role of God’s love in the salvation of man. We have to understand that the whole divine plan of our salvation was done only out of God’s love for us. And whichever way we reflect on the plan of salvation, of which we read in the Old Testament, we see that from the time of the creation of humans, who sinned, God’s love did not stop to act. Salvation was planned immediately.

The Eucharistic Prayer in the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great analyzes that whole situation to show how God’s love always prevailed to save mankind: “By your just judgement, O God, you expelled him (Adam) from paradise into this world and returned him to the earth from which he had been taken, and devised for him the salvation of regeneration which is in your Christ. And yet, O gracious Lord, You did not turn away from your creation, nor did you forget the work of your hands: You visited him in various ways because of your merciful loving kindness… You sent prophets, who foretold the salvation which was to come; You gave the law as an aid… When the fullness of time had come, You spoke to us through your Son Himself.” This prayer briefly encompasses the story of salvation as God prepared it in the Old Testament.

And then when we read and meditate upon our salvation as presented in the New Testament, we see that it was made possible because God is Love.  God is love, because He gave his only begotten Son Jesus Christ to save this world - to save the people from the slavery of sin and death. The Son of God proved his love by dying for us on the cross after having declared: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). - God is love, because through his Son Jesus He instituted the Most Holy Eucharist, that miracle of love, through which He is always mystically present among us and is our mystical nourishment in Holy Communion. This Holy Eucharist we are obliged to receive during the Easter Season. This we are to do that we may be more united to Him, may be sanctified by Him, and that the grace of salvation would strengthen us on our life’s way to eternity. Jesus himself did say: “He who eats my body and drinks my blood, is in me and I in him... and has life everlasting” (John 6:54-56).

Having understood that God is love, let us now reflect upon the words of the paschal verse that we have read above. “This is the day of resurrection!” - Easter is the Feast that reminds us of the day of victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death, which He conquered by His death on the cross. It would have been a futile sacrifice and our faith would also be futile if Christ had not risen! -- Therefore, let us be illumined and through our faith let us understand this solemnity, which has given us so much love and grace, to unite us with God and with ourselves. - Let us embrace each other, with love towards one another, as one spiritual family, calling ourselves brothers and sisters, by one word - Brethren! For, when we love each other we prove that we also love God. Saint John said he is a liar, who states that he loves God, yet hates his neighbor (1 Jh. 4:20).

Therefore, with this Easter let there be no lack of our love. Let there be no hate, or envy, or suspicion among us, for this destroys the love of neighbor. - In the end the verse invites us to forgive those who hate us or are in discord with us because of their own convictions. This also is a great sign of our love of God and neighbor. Having this kind of disposition of soul and heart, having forgiven our enemies, we become united with one another and are happy with the celebration of the Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because only having forgiven those, with whom we have a discord, we will be able to sing freely, sincerely and with love the words: Christ is risen! Let us always remember that God is love!

The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI in his message for the World Day of Peace for the New Year 2006 stated: “God is Love which saves, a loving Father who wants to see his children look upon one another as brothers and sisters, working responsibly to place their various talents at the service of the common good of the human family”. With this statement he wants to encourage the people of the world to thus promote the victory of peace. Let us give heed to all these reflections that a true love of God and neighbor will grow in us and thus we will help to promote peace in the world.

On this occasion of the Feast of the Christ’s Resurrection, we your Bishops bless and wish all of you that He bestow upon you His choicest graces to sanctify your souls, good health to continue your life’s endeavors, and profound happiness as you celebrate in your parishes, communities and families. We also bless and send greetings to those who are aged, invalid, sick and lonely, and greet all of you with our traditional greeting - CHRIST IS RISEN!

Хирстос Воскрес!        Воістину Воскрес!

Воскресіння день! Просвітімся торжеством, і одні одних обіймімо, та скажімо Браття! І тим, що ненавидять нас простім все з Воскресінням, і так усі заспіваймо: Христос Воскрес...(Стихира Пасхи)

Перша Енцикліка нашого нового Святішого Отця Венедикта XVI, під назвою «Бог є Любов» дає нам нагоду, коли ми святкуємо Великдень – Празник Воскресіння Ісуса Христа, застановитися над Божою любов’ю.

В даній Енцикліці Папа дуже глибоко говорить про роль Божої любові в ділі спасіння людей. Нам треба зрозуміти, що весь Божий план нашого спасіння був здійснений тільки з любові Бога до нас. І як би ми не застановлялися над планом спасіння, про який ми читаємо в Писанні Старого Завіту, ми спостерігаємо, що від часу створення людей, які згрішили, Божа Любов не переставала діяти. Бог відразу подумав про спасіння.

Євхаристійна молитва на Божественній Літургії св. Василія Великого аналізує цілу ту ситуацію, щоб показати, як Божа любов все діяла, щоб спасти людей: «Твоїм праведним судом Ти, Боже, вигнав його (Адама) з раю у світ цей і повернув до землі, з якої він був узятий, і справляючи йому спасення через зновубуття в самому Христі Твоєму. Бо не обернувся Ти докраю від сотворіння Твого, яке Ти сотворив, Благий; і не забув Ти діла рук Твоїх, але посітив Ти многообразно, ради милости Твоєї... Говорив Ти до нас устами рабів Твоїх пророків, провіщаючи нам прийдешнє спасення; закон дав ти нам на поміч... Коли ж прийшла повнота часу, Ти говорив до нас через самого Сина Твого». Оця молитва коротко описує нам історію спасіння, яке Бог приготовляв в часі Старого Завіту.

Відтак, коли ми читаємо і розважаємо про наше спасіння, яке записане в Новому Завіті, ми мусимо признати, що воно сталося можливим з Божої любові до нас. Бог є Любов, бо він віддав свого єдинородного Сина Ісуса Христа, щоб спасти світ – щоб спасти людей від неволі гріха і смерті. Син Божий доказав свою любов, вмираючи на хресті, давши таке твердження: «Ніхто неспроможен любити більше, ніж тоді, коли він за своїх друзів своє життя віддає» (Ів. 15:13). – Бог є Любов, бо через свого Сина Ісуса Він установив Пресвяту Євхаристію, чудо любові, через яке Він все є містично присутній між нами і є нашим духовним кормом у Святім Причастю. Цю Євхаристію ми зобов’язані приняти у Великоднім часі. Ми повинні це робити, щоб ми могли бути більше злучені з Ним, щоб бути освяченими Ним, і щоб ласка спасіння кріпила нас в житті на дорозі до вічності. Ісус сам сказав: «Хто споживає тіло моє і кров мою п’є, той в мені перебуває, а я в ньому... той живе життям вічним» (Ів. 6:54-56)

Зрозумівши, що Бог є Любов, тепер розважмо над словами пасхальної стихири, яку ми читали на початку. «Воскресіння день!» - Великдень це Празник, який пригадує нам про перемогу Ісуса Христа над гріхом і смертю, які він переміг розп’яттям на хресті. Марна була б та жертва і марна була б наша віра, якщо б Христос був не Воскрес! – Тому просвітімся і з вірою зрозуміймо це торжество, скільки там було любові і ласки даної нам, щоб нас об’єднати з Богом і з нами самими. – Тож, одні одних обіймімо – в любові одні до одних, як одна духовна родина, називаючи себе взаємно – брати і сестри, одним словом – Браття! Бо коли ми любимо себе взаємно, ми доказуємо, що ми також любимо Бога. Бо св. Іван каже, що неправдомовець є той, хто каже, що любить Бога, а ненавидить свого ближнього (1 Ів. 4:20). Отож, нехай з цим Великоднем не буде в нас жодного браку любові. Нехай не буде між нами ненависті, чи зависті, чи підозріння, які нищать любов ближнього. – В кінці, стихира закликає нас, щоб з воскресінням простити тим, що нас ненавидять або порізнені з нами через свої переконання. Це також є великий знак любові до ближнього і Бога. Маючи такий стан душі і серця, радіючи Празником Воскресіння Христового, об’єднані одні з одними, простивши нашим ворогам – ненависникам, бо тільки простивши тим з якими ми маємо якесь порізнення, ми зможемо свобідно, щиро та з любов’ю співати: Христос Воскрес! Пам’ятаймо, що Бог є Любов!

Святіший Отець Папа Венедикт XVI у своїм листі з нагоди Світового Дня Миру на Новий Рік 2006 сказав: «Бог є Любов яка спасає, Він люблячий Батько, який хоче своїх дітей, які дивляться одні на одних як брати і сестри, працюючи відповідально, віддаючи свої різнородні таланти на служіння спільного добра людської родини.» Цим твердженням він хотів заохотити людей всього світу, щоб так сприяти перемозі миру, тому звернім увагу на всі ці роздуми, щоб правдива любов до Бога і ближнього зростала в нас і в такий спосіб, щоб ми допомагали поширенню миру на землі.

З нагоди цього Празника Воскресіння Христового, ми, ваші Єпископи, благословимо вас і бажаємо вам усім, щоб Воскреслий Христос дарував вам свої щедрі ласки для освячення ваших душ, для доброго здоров’я, щоб надалі сповняти свої життєві змагання, та щоб ви радісно святкували у ваших парафіях, спільнотах і родинах. Також благословимо і поздоровляємо всіх тих, що старенькі, інваліди, хворі, одинокі і всіх вас вітаємо нашим традиційним привітом – ХРИСТОС ВОСКРЕС!
